M61 lanes shut as firefighters tackle car blaze near junction 30

Two lanes of the M61 southbound were closed near junction 30 in Lancashire after a car fire, with traffic queueing due to the partial closure.

The blaze broke out near junction 30 of the M61 southbound, heading towards Chorley. Pictures sent in from the scene show the front of the vehicle, which appears to be a Range Rover, well alight, with smoke pouring into the air. The image was taken before firefighters had arrived at the scene.

Eyewitness account

One eyewitness said: "Highways officers were seen carrying suitcases from the burnt out car. The car was a complete shell." Pictures taken shortly after show the scene after the emergency services had arrived.

Traffic impact

Firefighters had extinguished the blaze and two lanes of traffic were shut. Traffic was building due to the partial closure.
