The M60 motorway in Greater Manchester has been closed anti-clockwise between junctions 17 and 14 due to a sewage malfunction that caused flooding on the carriageway. The closure, which began on Thursday morning, has led to significant delays for commuters.
National Highways confirmed that the flooding resulted from a burst pipe linked to a local sewage infrastructure issue, unrelated to overnight roadworks that were scheduled to finish by 5am. Those works are now overrunning as crews deal with the spill.
Specialist support and equipment have been requested and are being mobilised to the scene. Traffic monitoring sites report delays of up to 50 minutes, with congestion expected to persist until the carriageway is deemed safe.
A signed diversion route is in place for motorists. National Highways advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and to follow the diversion signs.
