The M6 motorway has been closed in both directions following a serious accident, causing significant delays for commuters this morning. National Highways has temporarily held all traffic between Junction 21 (A57 Manchester Road, Woolston) and Junction 21A (M62 J10, Croft Interchange).
Delays of up to 30 minutes are reported on the M6 northbound between Junction 20 and Junction 21, as well as southbound between Junction 23 and Junction 21A. An additional 10-minute delay is affecting the southbound entry slip at Junction 21A from the M62 eastbound.
Separately, a vehicle breakdown on the M6 southbound between Junction 17 and Junction 16 has closed the left lane, though National Highways expects the incident to be cleared within the next hour. Congestion is also building at the M6 northbound exit slip at Junction 22, with delays of 10 minutes.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes where possible. National Highways continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as the incident is resolved.
