A serious incident on the M6 in Lancashire has caused major disruption after a lorry overturned and caught fire, closing the southbound carriageway between junctions 35 and 34. The crash occurred shortly after 10:15am on Wednesday, with the heavy goods vehicle jack-knifing across all three lanes.
National Highways confirmed that emergency services are at the scene, dealing with a fuel spillage that has complicated the response. The northbound carriageway has since reopened, but the southbound remains closed while recovery operations are underway.
Motorists have been advised to re-route their journeys and follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on local road signs. Specialist recovery equipment is required to clear the lorry, and delays of up to 10 minutes are expected on approach.
