The M57 southbound in Merseyside has reopened between junction seven at Aintree and junction six at Kirkby following a serious collision earlier on Thursday. The road was closed for several hours after a crash involving a grey Jaguar and a silver Mercedes, which left the motorway.
Merseyside Police received a report of the incident at 5.35pm. The driver of the Mercedes was treated by paramedics at the scene, and police said further updates would be issued when appropriate. National Highways North West confirmed that all emergency services were in attendance and that trapped traffic was being released.
The closure, which began around 6pm, caused significant disruption. Traffic England initially predicted the road would not reopen until around 9pm, but later revised estimates to between 1.30am and 1.45am on May 29. The vehicle involved was recovered, and specialist engineers attended the scene.
National Highways North West reported minimal residual delays on the approach after the road reopened. Drivers were advised to allow extra time and follow diversion routes, marked by a hollow triangle symbol, while the closure was in place.
