Overnight closures will affect the M53 Moreton Spur westbound from next month as National Highways carries out resurfacing of the Moreton Spur Roundabout, according to a public notice published in the ECHO.
Closure dates and affected stretch
Closures are planned between 9pm and 6am on nights from September 21 to October 10, 2026. The order takes effect on September 20, 2026, and allows the same overnight hours to be used on subsequent nights if needed until the works are completed within the legal period.
The ban applies to the M53 westbound carriageway from the exit slip road at junction 2a to the Moreton Road Bridge, covering the Moreton Spur westbound approach to the roundabout.
Diversions and exemptions
National Highways says clearly signed diversion routes will guide traffic via alternative M53 junctions and local roads. Drivers should follow on-road signs and allow additional time during the overnight works.
The prohibition does not apply to emergency services vehicles, National Highways works vehicles or traffic officer vehicles. All other traffic will be directed to follow signed diversions when closures are in force.
Impact and legal details
Overnight drivers heading towards Moreton and surrounding areas may face longer journey times and periods of queuing near diversion points. Those travelling late at night or early morning should check routes in advance, follow diversion signs and plan for extra time.
The order is not permanent. It comes into force on September 20, 2026, and has a maximum legal duration of 18 months, but it will only be used when closures are required for the resurfacing programme. Closures will apply only at times and to the extent shown by traffic signs.
