A crash on the M5 southbound near Bristol has caused significant delays as millions of people travel for the Easter bank holiday weekend. The incident occurred between junction 13 and 14, near Michaelwood Services, at around 1.57pm on Thursday, April 2.
Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported that the southbound carriageway was partially blocked, leading to queueing traffic. National Highways estimated delays of 40 minutes in the area. Emergency services were contacted for further information.
The RAC has stated that nearly 21 million journeys are planned over the four-day weekend. Additional congestion was reported on the A38 westbound into Cornwall, with travel times of 25 to 30 minutes near the Tamar Bridge. On the M5, holiday traffic caused long delays at junction 18 with the M49.
Further incidents included a crash on the M4 between junctions 19 and 20, and a broken-down vehicle on the A4044 Temple Gate in Bristol. A separate crash on the A380 saw a car overturn, with one person injured. Drivers were also facing queues at petrol stations, with Sainsbury's in St Phillips and Sedgemoor Services reporting fuel shortages.
