Major M5 Closure Following Serious Collision
A significant incident on the M5 motorway has resulted in a full closure of the northbound carriageway in Gloucestershire. The collision, which involved a vehicle leaving the road, occurred on Sunday, 23 November 2025, and was reported by authorities at 08:43 GMT.
Emergency Services Response and Traffic Chaos
Gloucestershire Police are leading an investigation into the crash, which has been described as severe. The motorway is shut northbound between Junction 14 (Falfield) and Junction 13 (Stroud). Emergency services, including police and National Highways Traffic Officers, are on the scene managing the situation and assisting with traffic control.
Heavy traffic congestion has built up in the area as a result of the closure. Officials have confirmed that drivers already caught within the closed section are currently being turned around and released from the carriageway.
Official Diversion Route for Motorists
National Highways has established a solid diversion route for northbound travellers. Motorists are advised to follow the Solid Triangle diversion symbol displayed on road signs. The official alternative route is as follows:
Exit the M5 northbound at J14. Turn left onto the B4509. At the junction with the A38, turn right and join the A38 northbound. Continue on the A38, passing through the villages of Cambridge and Claypits, to re-join the M5 northbound at J13.
Due to the nature of the incident, the police investigation is expected to take several hours, meaning the closure will remain in place for a considerable time. The Independent has reached out to Gloucestershire Police for an official comment on the ongoing situation.
