Severe delays are affecting the M4 in Wiltshire this morning after a lorry crashed into the central reservation. The westbound carriageway between Junction 16 near Swindon and Junction 17 near Chippenham has been closed following the incident, which occurred at around 2.10am.
Extensive barrier damage and diesel spillage
A HGV travelling westbound collided with the central reservation, causing extensive damage to approximately 300 metres of barrier before coming to rest within the central reservation. National Highways reported a significant diesel spillage extending for at least 100 metres across the westbound carriageway.
More than a mile of traffic is caught within the closure, with police and National Highways Traffic Officers turning affected traffic from the rear. The closure is expected to remain in place while cleanup and repair work is carried out.

Motorists are advised to expect significant delays and seek alternative routes where possible. National Highways has issued a statement on the serious collision, confirming the extent of the damage and the ongoing response.
