A lorry carrying 20 tonnes of prosecco was involved in a crash on the M4 in Berkshire, causing significant disruption on Monday morning. The incident occurred between junctions 13 and 14, near Newbury and Hungerford, Thames Valley Police said.

Boxes of the Italian sparkling wine spilled across the carriageway, leaving "significant debris" and "smashed glass throughout". One HGV had its empty container dislodged in the collision.

Despite the scale of the incident, only one person suffered minor injuries. "Amazingly, only one person suffered minor injuries," the force added, noting that "Not quite the roadside refreshment anyone had in mind."

Recovery of the vehicles was completed by 11.30am, and the debris was cleared by 12.56pm. The M4 reopened by 2.20pm after a temporary closure, with diversion routes in place during the disruption.
