A serious collision on the M4 near Bristol Airport has caused major disruption, closing the motorway in both directions and leading to long queues across the Severn Bridge. The incident occurred shortly before 5am on the Prince of Wales Bridge near Almondsbury.
National Highways confirmed that the road is expected to remain closed through the morning due to the severity of the crash. Avon and Somerset Police are leading the response, with emergency services at the scene of a serious injury collision between junctions 22 and 21.
Motorists are facing delays of at least an hour, with diversions in place. Eastbound traffic is advised to exit at J22, take the M49 southbound, then the M5 northbound to rejoin the M4 at J16. Westbound drivers should exit at J21, take the M48 across the Severn Bridge, and rejoin the M4 at J23.
The crash has also affected Bristol Airport, which warned passengers of potential delays. As of 9am, the motorway remained closed, adding significant time to journeys.
