A vehicle fire on the M23 has caused significant disruption and long delays on the approach to Gatwick Airport on Tuesday morning. The van was engulfed in flames on the M23 southbound, leading to delays of approximately 30 minutes, according to National Highways.
Four Miles of Congestion and Lane Closures
There is an estimated four miles of congestion on the approach between J8 (M25) and J9 (Gatwick Airport), with two of the four lanes remaining closed. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is reported to be at the scene attending to the incident.
Social Media Footage Shows Blaze
Footage shared on social media shows the vehicle on the side of the carriageway engulfed in flames. The fire appears to be spreading through the van, sending plumes of black smoke into the air. In another video, large billows of smoke can be seen rising high above the motorway, visible from a considerable distance, as a 40mph speed restriction has been implemented.
Impact on Motorists
The blaze is expected to affect hundreds of motorists heading to Gatwick Airport, with disruption spilling onto the M25 as well. The Standard has contacted Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and Surrey Police for further comment.
