M1 Southbound Closed After HGV Crashes Off Motorway

An HGV has careered off the carriageway on the M1 southbound near junction 35 in Rotherham, causing long delays and bringing traffic to a standstill. The incident occurred at around 11am on the entry slip road at junction 35, which remains closed.

National Highways initially reported that all lanes were held, but later confirmed that three of four lanes on the main carriageway have reopened. However, the entry slip road at junction 35 remains closed, with the event expected to clear between 19:45 and 20:00. Delays of up to 30 minutes are still being reported.

South Yorkshire Police said: 'We are currently responding to reports of an HGV leaving the carriageway on the M1 southbound near J35. The southbound carriageway is currently closed, and motorists are asked to avoid the area.'

National Highways has stated that the incident on the slip road will not be cleared until 6.30pm to 6.45pm, while the lane closure on the M1 southbound is expected to clear between 4:30pm and 4:45pm. Normal traffic conditions are anticipated to return by 15:00 to 15:15 on the main carriageway.

Congestion has built up to junction 36 at Barnsley South and Hoyland. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while emergency crews work at the scene.
