The M1 motorway in Derbyshire was closed southbound between junction 28 (Mansfield) and junction 27 (Felley) on Wednesday morning due to a police-led incident. Highways England first reported the closure at 5.47am, advising that traffic had been stopped and a diversion was in place.
Drivers faced significant delays, with congestion stretching up to nine miles and estimated journey times of around 90 minutes. The closure also affected local roads, including Brookhill Lane in Pinxton, as traffic diverted via the A38 and A610.
The road reopened shortly before 7.30am, but National Highways warned that residual delays would persist as trapped traffic was released. In a statement on X, the organisation confirmed the reopening and urged motorists to allow extra time for their journeys.
The nature of the police incident has not been officially confirmed, though speculation on social media suggested it may have involved a pedestrian on the carriageway rather than a collision. Derbyshire Police have not issued further details.
