Motorists are facing significant disruption on the M1 northbound after a lorry crash and heavy snow forced the closure of three of four lanes between junction 28 (Mansfield) and junction 29 (Chesterfield). The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, January 9, as Arctic weather conditions continue to affect the UK.
National Highways has confirmed that recovery of the lorry is underway, and winter fleet vehicles are en route to clear snow that has settled on the closed lanes. Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected, with approximately four miles of congestion reported. All lanes have since reopened, but motorists are advised to allow extra time and take extra care due to the weather.
An amber severe weather alert for snow remains in place until 9am, covering the West and East Midlands. National Highways warns that routes around Birmingham, Leicester, and Nottingham will see particularly difficult driving conditions, with considerable delays possible. The A628 Woodhead Pass is also likely to be affected.
