Lumo trains on the West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Stirling are running without available toilets, affecting the five-and-a-half-hour journey. The operator announced the issue on social media on August 1, citing a fault with the onboard facilities.
Impact on services
Services have been forced to make longer stops at stations like Preston to allow passengers to use platform toilets. One affected train, the 6.11am departure from London Euston on Friday, was delayed by 58 minutes and terminated at Motherwell.
Operator response
A Lumo spokesperson said: "We have been experiencing some issues with the reliability of some of our toilet facilities onboard our West Coast services. We are working closely with Alstom to rectify the issues." Alstom refurbished the trains for Lumo, which operates with Class 222 Meridian trains also used by East Midlands Railway, which has faced similar toilet faults.
Train operators in Britain are not legally required to provide onboard toilets. Lumo also runs services on the East Coast Main Line and operates on an open access basis, meaning it sets its own fares and receives no taxpayer subsidies.
