Lorry fire shuts A69 near Haltwhistle for hours

A large articulated lorry fire closed the A69 near Haltwhistle in both directions for several hours on Thursday morning. The road fully reopened before 3pm.

Incident at Alston turnoff

The incident happened at around 9am near Haltwhistle at the Alston turnoff on the A69. Emergency services attended the scene, and the road was blocked in both directions while crews worked.

A Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were called to an incident at 9:01am this morning (October 1) involving a large articulated lorry fire on the A69 Haltwhistle Bypass."

Fire crews and police response

Two fire appliances attended the scene and brought the fire under control. Police were also called to assist and help with the flow of traffic as diversion routes were set in place.

The spokesperson added: "The road was temporarily closed to allow emergency services to operate safely and to minimise risk to the public."

Road reopened

Crews have now left the scene, and the A69 Haltwhistle Bypass has fully reopened to traffic.
