Trains from Liverpool Lime Street have been cancelled this morning as a major heatwave continues to affect the UK. East Midlands Railway (EMR) has suspended all services between Liverpool Lime Street and Sheffield due to high temperatures, with trains only running between Sheffield and Norwich.
Alternative Travel Options
Passengers affected by the disruption can use their tickets at no extra cost on TransPennine Express services between Liverpool Lime Street and Sheffield in both directions, or on Northern services between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield. EMR and National Rail are urging travellers to complete their journeys before 12pm today if possible.
Heat-Related Fleet Issues
EMR stated: "Following high temperatures across the country over the weekend, some trains have required additional checks and maintenance, placing further pressure on the available fleet." The operator has introduced a reduced timetable on some routes to protect the wider network and maintain resilience. EMR added: "By making considered reductions to a small number of services, EMR can better manage the available fleet and retain a pool of trains that can be deployed where needed should further disruption occur."
National Rail confirmed that EMR is experiencing heat-related issues affecting some train services, leading to units being removed from service. As a result, trains on various routes across the East Midlands Railway network may be cancelled or revised to operate only part of their normal route.
Heat Health Alert
A yellow heat health alert has been in place for the North West and other parts of England from 9am on July 12, issued by the UK Health Security Agency. The alert is expected to remain until 9pm on July 15. Temperatures in Liverpool are forecast to reach 27°C by 4pm today, according to the Met Office.
EMR is working closely with Network Rail and its fleet partners to monitor conditions and return services to normal as quickly as possible. Customers are advised to check their journey before setting off and, where possible, travel before 12pm.
