A devastating incident at New York's LaGuardia Airport has led to the deaths of two Air Canada Express pilots and caused significant disruption for air travellers. The collision occurred late on Monday, 23 March 2026, when a CRJ-900 aircraft, operating as flight AC8648 from Montreal, collided with a Port Authority fire truck on the runway shortly after landing.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The accident took place at 11:38 PM local time, with the aircraft reportedly cleared to land on runway 04. According to air traffic control recordings, the fire truck had also been authorised to cross the runway at the same time. The impact resulted in the fatalities of the captain and first officer, while two emergency responders in the fire truck sustained injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause, and LaGuardia Airport remains closed indefinitely.
Widespread Flight Disruptions and Cancellations
The aftermath has triggered severe travel chaos, with hundreds of flights cancelled and tens of thousands of passengers affected. LaGuardia, a key commuter airport ranking in the top 20 for passenger numbers in the US, typically handles nearly 50,000 arrivals and departures daily. Notably, LaGuardia does not handle transatlantic flights due to a lack of international processing facilities, with Canadian arrivals pre-cleared by US Customs and Border Protection.
