A KLM Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was forced to divert to Phuket, Thailand, on Tuesday night after a passenger's mobile phone overheated, causing smoke in the cabin. The incident, which occurred while the aircraft was cruising at 39,000 feet over the Bay of Bengal, highlights ongoing concerns about the risks posed by lithium batteries in aviation.
The airline reported that the crew handled the situation effectively, and the captain decided to land as a precaution. No passengers or crew were in danger, according to KLM. However, the diversion resulted in significant disruption. The crew exceeded their duty hours during the investigation, forcing the airline to arrange hotels and meals for approximately 300 passengers and rebook their onward travel.
Adrian Young, senior aviation consultant at Dutch firm to70, noted that the increasing use of lithium-ion batteries in electronics creates a fire risk on aircraft, as such fires are difficult to extinguish. He emphasized that having devices in the cabin is safer than in checked luggage, as crews are trained to handle cabin fires. Young advised passengers to keep devices in hand baggage, monitor charging, and never move seats if a device slips into the seat mechanism.
This incident follows similar events, including a Frontier Airlines diversion in February after a spare battery caught fire, and the 2016 recall of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones due to fire risks. While a ban on portable electronic devices is unlikely given their ubiquity, the aviation industry continues to adapt to manage the fire risk of lithium batteries.
