A hot air balloon made a dramatic emergency landing in the middle of a residential street in Bedford on Saturday, narrowly missing houses and parked cars. The incident occurred on Bower Street at around 9.30am, with bystanders rushing to assist the pilot in guiding the balloon safely to the ground.
Sam Coldham, who was walking his dog with his partner Sian King, witnessed the descent. Footage captured by King shows the balloon manoeuvring between telegraph poles, wires, and parked vehicles. Several onlookers grabbed the guide rope to help lower the balloon, preventing a collision with nearby houses or cars.
Georgia Balać, whose partner helped by catching an emergency line thrown by the pilot, described the event as extraordinary. She told the Bedford Independent: 'It came down quickly and uncontrollably, very nearly missing the terraced houses and pylons. It made a near-perfect landing between parked cars on either side.'
The British Balloon and Airship Club confirmed to the BBC that the balloon 'landed without incident' and that everyone was safe. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulates all ballooning operations in the UK, requiring commercial pilots to hold a valid commercial balloon pilot licence to ensure safety.
According to a ScienceDirect report, only 98 hot air balloon incidents occurred in the UK between 1976 and 2004. In April, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) investigated a collision in Essex caused by a malfunction with a balloon's envelope, the airtight bag that holds hot air.
