Hogwarts Express Season Delayed as Safety Upgrades Force Steam Train Opening Uncertainty
Hogwarts Express Season Delayed by Safety Upgrades on Steam Train

The operator of the heritage steam train renowned for its role as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films has announced a delayed start to the 2026 season, citing essential safety upgrades on its historic carriages. West Coast Railways (WCR) confirmed that opening bookings for the Jacobite service, which runs through the Scottish Highlands, has been postponed, with no firm date set for when operations can resume.

Safety Upgrades Impact Traditional Carriages

The Jacobite train features 1950s-era Mark 1 coaches, which are equipped with traditional hinged doors lacking a central locking system. In response to regulatory requirements, WCR has formally approached the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to reinstate these classic carriages after installing a central door locking system across its entire Mark 1 fleet used on mainline routes.

Regulatory Dispute and Business Concerns

This delay stems from a prolonged regulatory dispute between WCR and the ORR. In 2005, the ORR banned passenger-operated door locks on trains, a rule that heritage services were initially exempt from until recent crackdowns. WCR had maintained an exemption for nearly three decades until 2023, when it was forced to compromise by acquiring Mark 2 coaches from another heritage operator to comply, albeit at reduced capacity.

In 2024, WCR expressed concerns that the multimillion-pound cost of implementing central locking could jeopardise its business, arguing that its existing door systems were equally safe. However, the company has now committed to adhering to the regulations to ensure the long-term viability of heritage rail.

Significant Undertaking for Heritage Experience

WCR described the safety upgrade as a "significant undertaking" that will require considerable time to complete. The operator is collaborating with the ORR to finalise a start date for the season, emphasising that the traditional Mark 1 carriages have been a hallmark of the Jacobite experience for over 25 years, cherished by train enthusiasts and Harry Potter fans alike.

The Jacobite service operates between Mallaig and Fort William, crossing the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Scottish Highlands. While the delay is in effect, WCR has advised customers to subscribe to email updates or monitor its social media channels for announcements regarding booking availability.
