A TikTok user with 128,000 followers has revealed a little-known car button that can help your air conditioning cool the vehicle faster during a heatwave. The button, marked with a symbol of a car with an arrow looping inside, is the recirculation button. It shuts off the vents to the outside, trapping the air already inside the car.
According to the TikToker, known as Capturing Cars, pressing this button while using the air conditioning allows the trapped air to get colder on each pass, speeding up the cooling process. Without it, the system draws in hot outside air, which takes longer to cool down.
However, the button should be avoided on damp days or when the car is fogging up, as it traps humidity inside, causing condensation on the windows. The expert noted that many cars automatically deactivate recirculation when the windscreen demister is on.
Commenters shared additional benefits, such as keeping out exhaust fumes in traffic or unpleasant smells from manure on country roads. One user warned that on long drives, leaving recirculation on too long could deplete oxygen and make you sleepy, advising to open a window occasionally.
