A desperate rescue operation is continuing off the coast of Guyana after a ferry carrying 133 people capsized, leaving dozens missing. As of Sunday afternoon, 67 individuals have been recovered, including 15 children, according to local officials.
Ferry Sinks Near Georgetown
The MV Barima was en route from the capital Georgetown on Saturday when a distress call was received at 11:03 p.m. local time. The vessel carried 116 passengers and 17 crew members. Public Works Minister Juan Edghill confirmed that the government launched an immediate search operation involving both official teams and privately-owned boats.
Rescue Efforts Intensify
Prime Minister Mark Phillips reported that among the rescued are 41 men and 11 women, including the boat's captain. The captain has since returned to the area to assist the rescue mission, which has been "significantly increased" with crews more than doubling their search area on Sunday. Phillips stated, "We're hopeful we'll be able to account for all that were on board."
Vessel Within Capacity
Phillips confirmed that the ferry was within its weight capacity at the time of the incident, as it was licensed to hold more than 300 passengers. The names of those onboard will be released once medical checks and rescue operations are complete.
