Drivers across Greater Manchester should be aware of ongoing roadworks that are causing delays on several key routes. The disruptions range from temporary traffic lights to full closures, affecting travel in Bury, Bolton, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, and Wigan.
Why roadworks happen
Roadworks can be carried out for various reasons, including changes to the road layout, emergency repairs, and utility company work. However, a 2025 parliamentary transport committee report noted that they can also be a source of frustration, causing congestion and delays that harm the economy, disrupt transport services, and limit access to high streets and businesses.

Closures and restrictions by borough
In Bury, temporary traffic lights are in place on A667 Ringley Road at The Spinney until 12th August for water main work, and on A676 Bolton Road at Stanmere Court until 17th August.
Bolton has temporary lights on A579 Bury Road between A58 and B6208 until 30th August for electricity work.
In Manchester, A6010 Alan Turing Way northbound is closed for emergency repairs from A635 Ashton Old Road to Wilson Street until 11th September. On B5093 Wilmslow Road, temporary lights are in place until 25th January 2027, and on B5217 Manchester Road until 14th August.
Oldham sees A62 Oldham Way closed at Manchester Street roundabout until 25th September, with a diversion. A671 Rochdale Road northbound is closed from B6195 Middleton Road to Radcliffe Street until 29th January 2027. Temporary lights are on A6052 Delph New Road until 12th August and A6052 Denshaw Road until 12th October. B6189 Thompson Lane and B6195 Middleton Road also have temporary lights until 14th August and 29th January 2027 respectively.
In Rochdale, B6225 Hollingworth Road has temporary lights from Inghams Lane to Rakewood Road until 28th August.
Salford has roadworks and a contraflow on A34 New Bailey Street until 18th May 2027, temporary lights on A576 Cromwell Road until 4th September, and on A5066 Ordsall Lane at two locations until 8th January 2027 and 28th August. B5229 Half Edge Lane has temporary lights until 9th August.
Stockport has A523 Macclesfield Road closed for gas main work until 30th August, temporary lights on A627 George Lane, A560 Hyde Road, A560 Stockport Road, and A560 Stockport Road East until 28th August.
Tameside has one lane closed on A57 Mottram Moor eastbound until 31st December 2027.
In Trafford, temporary lights are on A538 Hale Road until 10th August, A6144 Manchester Road at two locations until 14th and 17th August, A6144 Warburton Lane until 25th August, B5166 Northenden Road until 11th August, and B5214 Crofts Bank Road until 16th August.
Wigan has A58 Gerard Street southbound closed until 22nd November, A58 Market Street closed until 31st August, temporary lights on A577 Manchester Road until 12th August, one lane closed on A580 East Lancashire Road until 30th September, and temporary lights on A49 Wigan Lane, A49 Wigan Road, A572 Chapel Street, A572 Manchester Road, A573 Ashton Road, B5207 Ashton Road, and B5238 Wigan Road at various dates.
