A Greater Anglia train has partially derailed near Wickford in Essex, marking the second railway incident in less than 24 hours. The derailment has blocked all lines between Southend Victoria and Wickford, causing major disruption to services on the route.
National Rail statement
An initial statement from National Rail said: 'There is a problem currently under investigation between Southend Victoria and Wickford, meaning that all lines are blocked. As a result, trains running between Southend Victoria and London Liverpool Street will be cancelled.'
'Major' disruption, delays, and cancellations are expected until at least 6pm. A spokesperson later confirmed that responders were 'dealing with a derailment' and 'working quickly to understand the situation and to provide assistance where needed'. They added: 'We will provide further information in due course.'
No injuries reported
No injuries have been reported currently. This incident follows a Southern Rail derailment near Lewes railway station in East Sussex, which left two people severely injured and another 18 with less serious injuries. Around 150 passengers were on board that service from London Victoria to Eastbourne, and several carriages turned on their side, trapping people for hours and prompting a major incident to be declared.
