A large fire near Glasgow Central station has caused severe disruption to rail services, with Scotland's busiest station expected to remain closed throughout Monday. The blaze broke out on Sunday afternoon at a vape shop on Union Street, leading to the closure of the station with no estimated reopening time.
Network Rail confirmed that no trains will run to or from the high-level platforms, while trains using low-level platforms will not stop at Glasgow Central. Avanti West Coast advised that an amended service will run to Preston, Carlisle, and Motherwell, allowing connections to Edinburgh and local Glasgow services.
ScotRail warned of substantial disruption and urged passengers to check for updates before travelling. TransPennine Express said its services between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street or Manchester airport would not run on Monday, while trains between Edinburgh and Newcastle or Manchester airport face delays and cancellations.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews were still battling the fire as of 5am on Monday, with 15 fire appliances and specialist resources deployed at the height of the incident. No casualties have been reported.
First Minister John Swinney expressed concern on social media, thanking emergency services and urging the public to follow travel guidance. Labour MSP Paul Sweeney noted that the building, dating back to 1851, had partially collapsed, but the adjacent Forsyth Building, Caledonian Chambers, and Central Hotel appeared unaffected.
