Glasgow Airport Warns of Delays Due to Roadworks, Urges Extra Travel Time
Glasgow Airport Advises Extra Time for Roadworks Delays

Glasgow Airport has advised passengers to factor in extra travel time due to ongoing local roadworks that may cause traffic delays and disrupt bus services. The warning, posted on the airport's website, highlights potential congestion on routes to and from the airport, particularly affecting services to Buchanan Bus Station.

Roadworks Details and Impact

The roadworks are part of Glasgow's Avenues project, specifically on North Hanover Street, which began in May 2025 and are expected to last at least 18 months. Lane restrictions and temporary traffic lights have been installed, leading to significant disruption for bus services. Motorists can still use North Hanover Street but may face hold-ups. The project is due for completion in November 2026, according to Glasgow City Council.

The airport's notice states: "Major roadworks on North Hanover Street, part of Glasgow's 'Avenues' project, will see lane restrictions and temporary lights installed from Monday 26th May 2025 for at least 18 months, causing significant disruption to bus services accessing Buchanan Bus Station. Passengers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time."

George Square Transformation

The road reopening along the north of George Square marks a milestone in the square's renovation. Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for City Centre Recovery at Glasgow City Council, said: "The reopening of the road along the north of George Square is another key milestone in the wall to wall transformation of Glasgow's greatest civic space. With the high-quality stonework extending across the roads and pavements, everyone is already getting a real sense of how fantastic our new Square is shaping up to be."

Forty-six new trees have been planted in George Square as part of the latest stage of its renovation. The council confirmed that private cars can use the new carriageway between 7pm and 7am, and vehicular access to the lower end of North Frederick Street will begin in late July 2026.

Broader Avenues Project

The Avenues project, including the North Hanover Street and Kyle Street Avenues, will link directly to Sighthill Bridge, creating a safer route for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users between north Glasgow and the city centre. The scheme includes broader pavements, rain gardens for drainage, newly planted street trees, upgraded lighting, and a dedicated cycleway. The council stated: "The Avenues forms part of the City Centre Strategy. The priority of this programme is about creating inclusive and sustainable space for people through quality public realm, green infrastructure and innovative technology."

The George Square redevelopment is part of the £123 million Avenues scheme, funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, backed by both the Scottish and UK Governments.
