Passengers flying with Ryanair and WizzAir from London Gatwick have been warned of potential disruption in August as ground staff threaten strike action. The walkout, involving employees of Menzies working on the Shell Contract at the airport, could affect around 8,000 travellers daily.
Why are workers striking?
The dispute centres on pay and overtime rates. Unite the Union says workers are demanding a 4.5% pay rise and that their overtime rate be brought in line with other Menzies staff at Gatwick. Currently, those on the Shell contract receive time and a third for overtime, while other Menzies workers get time and a half.
A 3.5% offer from Menzies was rejected, and workers are frustrated that the company has not improved its proposal. The ballot for strike action closes on Tuesday, 11 August, with action possible soon after if the vote is in favour.
Impact on summer travel
Unite regional officer Ben Davis said: “Gatwick passengers will not be pleased that their summer getaways could be ruined because Menzies’ greed has resulted in their planes sitting on the tarmac. Strikes can still be avoided but Menzies needs to stop trying to strongarm our members and return with a decent offer.”
Gatwick Airport has acknowledged the potential strike and expressed hope that both parties can find a solution to avoid disruption.
