Gatwick Airport has been forced to close its restaurants due to a water outage - the second one in just weeks. Passengers at the London airport’s North Terminal have reportedly been turned away from entering cafes and restaurants due to the issue.
Passengers report no water in entire airport
“I’m in Gatwick airport rn and there’s no water in the entire airport, can’t even wash your hands,” wrote one passenger online. Another said: “There’s no water in the entire airport, you can't even wash your hands, women’s toilets can’t flush. Restaurants can’t serve food. Nightmare for travellers.”
SES Water, which supplies water to the airport, confirmed that they located a burst in a field and have raised the issue for emergency works.
No announcements from airport
Passengers have claimed that there were no announcements from the UK’s second busiest airport regarding the shortage, The Sun reports. “People are treating the toilets like porta loos at a festival, its going to be a biohazard soon,” one traveller told the outlet.
Flights are not currently being affected by the issue. The Standard has reached out to Gatwick Airport for comment.
Previous outage last month
Last month, a power outage at a water treatment plant in southeast England resulted in restaurants and toilets closing. SES Water said: "We know this incident has caused disruption for customers and our partners and we are sorry. We thank everyone for their patience while our teams worked to restore supplies as quickly and safely as possible."
Travel expert Lisa Francessa Nand told the BBC that the situation was “unprecedented”. “This has never happened,” she said last month.
