The demolition of the Gateshead flyover appears to be nearing completion, with aerial pictures showing the scale of the work so far. The Park Lane roundabout in Gateshead, which links the Felling Bypass to the Tyne Bridge, has been shut since July 25 to allow for the section of the closed A167 flyover above it to be torn down.
Progress on site
Most of the flyover road has now been removed. Access ramps adjacent to the former Union Electric Steel plant have also gone. Contractors BAM finished the Park Lane works in August.
Around 2,000 tonnes of crushed stone will also need to be cleared away before the roundabout can reopen.
Cost and timeline
It was revealed last month that the overall cost of demolishing the flyover - which was closed in December 2024 - is expected to have risen to around £31 million. Gateshead Council had originally set aside an £18 million budget for the works.
It is hoped that the project can be fully completed by October.
