Four members of a Gambian family from Leeds died in a crash on the A38 near Derby on Saturday night (July 25). The victims have been identified locally as Abu Camara, 36, his wife, their seven-month-old daughter, and an 18-year-old woman, also believed to be a family member.
The crash
Police confirmed that a 36-year-old man, two women aged 18 and 30, and a baby girl were killed when a red Hyundai left the carriageway near Toyota Island and struck a tree. The collision occurred at approximately 11pm, reports Derbyshire Live. The 36-year-old man and the two women were pronounced dead at the scene. The baby girl was rushed to hospital but later died.
A 33-year-old man, the driver of the Hyundai, was hospitalised with serious injuries and remains there. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been bailed.
Tributes
The Gambian Welfare Society in Leeds posted on Facebook that the "community in Leeds, especially the Sarahuleh community, has been struck by a devastating tragedy." Mr Camara was remembered as a "dedicated servant of his community" passionate about supporting a new mosque and mentoring young children at football. "He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service," the post added.
The High Commission of The Gambia in the UK confirmed that four Gambian nationals lost their lives. A spokesperson said: "According to information received, the four individuals were travelling together from Birmingham to Leeds when their vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. All four occupants sadly lost their lives." High Commissioner Dr Fatou Bensouda extended condolences. The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr Suntou Touray, spoke with the President of the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds, Mr Yanks Sawo, to convey condolences and coordinate with the family's liaison representative. The High Commission remains in contact with authorities and affected families.
