Free Bus Travel for Under-22s in England: What You Need to Know
Free bus travel for under-22s in England

Young people across England now have access to free bus travel, thanks to a new government initiative aimed at making transport more affordable for the younger generation. The scheme, which launched this week, allows anyone under the age of 22 to hop on buses without paying a fare.

Who Qualifies for Free Bus Travel?

The offer applies to all residents of England aged 21 or younger. To benefit, eligible passengers must apply for a digital or physical pass, which will be checked upon boarding. The scheme covers local bus services but excludes long-distance coaches and private transport providers.

Why Was This Scheme Introduced?

The government says the policy is designed to:

  • Reduce transport costs for young people and families
  • Encourage the use of public transport over cars
  • Support education and employment opportunities by improving mobility

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps called it a "game-changer" for young commuters, students, and low-income families.

How to Apply

Applications can be made online through local council websites or at designated transport hubs. Proof of age and residency will be required. Once approved, passes will be valid for up to two years or until the holder turns 22.

What’s Next?

If successful, the scheme could be expanded to include other forms of transport, such as trams and light rail. Critics, however, argue that more investment is needed in rural bus networks to make the policy truly effective nationwide.
