A tragic fire at a luxury beach resort in the Dominican Republic has resulted in the death of a woman and the evacuation of approximately 1,700 tourists. The blaze erupted at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham in Bayahibe, located on the country's southeastern coast, on Friday.
Victim and Casualties
The deceased has been identified as Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian holidaymaker. Three individuals were transported to the hospital, while six others—including guests, visitors, and emergency responders—received medical treatment at the scene.
Evacuations and Response
Hundreds of tourists were relocated to nearby hotels and alternative accommodations as firefighters worked to control the flames. Shocking footage shared by local media showed thick black smoke billowing across the Caribbean coastline, with large sections of the resort, including its thatched roof, engulfed in fire.
Investigation and Cause
The Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Centre (COE) reported that preliminary findings indicate the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds and the flammable palm roofing used in parts of the complex. The fire has since been brought under control, but an investigation into its cause is ongoing.
Impact on Tourism
The neighboring Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace resort was undamaged and remains open. The COE confirmed that tourist activities in Bayahibe and the surrounding area are continuing as normal. The Dominican Republic, the Caribbean's most visited tourist destination, attracted over 5.6 million visitors in the first five months of this year.
Resort Background
The hotel is situated in what was once a tranquil fishing village, now a thriving tourist hotspot that has retained much of its peaceful character. Viva recently completed major refurbishments, transforming communal spaces and dining options while maintaining shared facilities with its sister property, Dominicus Beach. Together, the two resorts dominate much of the seafront in Dominicus.
Social Media Reactions
Residents took to social media to express concerns that the inferno overwhelmed initial emergency crews. One user posted on X alongside footage of thick black smoke: "Help. The Dominicus hotel, in Bayahibe, is being affected by a fire. Although fire trucks are already on the scene, the magnitude of the blaze exceeds the available equipment and greater support is required with higher-impact units to fully extinguish it."
