FCDO Issues Major Travel Warning for British Tourists in Spain After Tragic Deaths
FCDO Warns British Tourists About Spain Drowning Risks

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a major travel warning for British tourists visiting Spain, highlighting the hidden dangers of swimming that have led to tragic deaths. The updated advice comes after a record-breaking heatwave across Europe and the UK, and follows the death of a three-year-old British girl in Mallorca who was found floating face down in a swimming pool.

FCDO Warns of Drowning Risks in Pools and Seas

According to the FCDO, every year people drown in the sea and in swimming pools in Spain. The government website states: "Every year, people drown in the sea and in swimming pools in Spain." The advice urges tourists to always supervise children and keep small children within arm's reach in and around swimming pools, even if they can swim or there is a lifeguard present.

The warning also applies to swimming in the sea. The FCDO advises: "Take care when swimming in the sea. Always supervise children and keep small children within arm's reach. Some beaches, especially around Spanish islands, may have strong undercurrents." Hidden rocks or shallow depths can cause serious injury or death, and tourists are told not to dive into unknown water or swim at beaches where a river runs into the sea.

Beach Flag System and Heatwave Context

The FCDO also urges tourists to learn and understand the Spanish beach flag system to identify unsafe swimming spots. The warning is particularly important for those travelling with children.

Meanwhile, British tourists face additional risks from the ongoing heatwave. The Local Spain reports that across most of the Iberian Peninsula, including Spain and Portugal, the probability of warmer-than-normal weather this summer exceeds 70%. Higher-than-usual temperatures are also likely on the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands, requiring extra care during outdoor activities.
