Revealed: The UK's Top Motorway Service Stations

As millions of Brits prepare for festive road trips to visit family and friends, the crucial question of where to take a break has been definitively answered by new research. A comprehensive study has identified the nation's finest service stations, with Exeter claiming the coveted top spot.

The research, conducted by Northgate Vehicle Hire, evaluated facilities across Britain based on critical factors including electric vehicle charging infrastructure, parking costs, green spaces, and amenities. This comes as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents emphasises the importance of taking a 15-minute break every two hours to ensure driver safety during long journeys.

What Makes Exeter Services the Best?

Exeter Services, located on the M5, achieved an impressive overall score of 71.67, securing its position as the UK's premier motorway stop. It stands out by catering to the needs of every type of traveller, from the long-distance commuter to those needing a quick refreshment.

The service station's winning formula includes a remarkable 56 electric vehicle charging points, ensuring minimal waiting time for EV drivers. Furthermore, it offers travellers a choice of 13 different food and drink outlets and provides free parking for up to two hours.

The Top Contenders for Your Next Pit Stop

Following closely behind Exeter, the southbound Newport Pagnell services on the M1 claimed second place with a score of 66.90. This station was praised for its ample green space, perfect for stretching legs or walking pets, alongside a variety of refuelling options.

In third position is Fleet Services on the M3, a popular stop for families heading to LEGOLAND Windsor. It scored 64.58 and boasts 26 rapid charging points and 16 food and drink outlets. In a unique partnership with charity Electric Umbrella, Fleet Services also features a bright yellow piano, offering travellers a chance for a musical interlude.

The ranking of the top five service stations is completed by Wetherby in fourth and Cambridge in fifth place.
