Edge Lane delays 'until further notice' after fuel spillage

Lanes have been shut on Edge Lane this evening by police following a fuel spillage, causing significant delays for motorists. A post on Merseyside Police Contact Centre at 6.20pm confirmed that officers had been called to the eastbound carriageway of Edge Lane and Edge Lane Drive in Old Swan, heading towards Broad Green and the M62.

Police statement on spillage

Police said the officers implemented lane closures due to a spillage on the road. The force added: 'We are working with our partner agencies to clear this spillage, however there will be a delay in travel time until further notice.' The spillage has been identified as fuel, according to traffic monitoring service Inrix.

Impact on traffic

Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported that two lanes have been closed and there is 'queueing traffic' due to the fuel spillage. Edge Lane is a major route which connects Liverpool city centre to the M62, so the disruption is expected to affect many commuters. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes or expect delays until the spillage is cleared.
