Budget airline easyJet has issued an update for passengers flying in August and clarified some of its rules around what you can pack in your hand luggage.
In a recent post entitled "Important safety notice update", easyJet explained the rules around lithium-powered devices, including power banks, laptops, and vapes, and explained that it has a limit on one popular item that many holidaymakers take with them.
Laptops and vapes must stay in hand baggage
The airline started the update by explaining: "Laptops must be carried in hand baggage only and must not be placed in checked (hold) luggage." It added: "E-cigarettes and vaping devices must also remain in hand baggage only and be switched off at all times. Customers must take extra care to avoid accidentally turning them on while on board the plane."
But it's especially strict when it comes to power banks. These devices are becoming increasingly popular among holidaymakers, as they let you charge your phone and other devices on the go.
Strict limits on power banks
However, there have been reports of fires on planes caused by power banks. An Air Busan plane caught fire in South Korea in January 2025, injuring three people, and investigators found it was likely that the blaze was caused by one of these devices.
Many airlines are now placing strict limits on the number of power banks that can be carried onboard, and easyJet says: "A maximum of two power banks is allowed per person. Power banks cannot be charged or used to charge other devices during the flight. They should still be carried in cabin baggage only and ideally be placed somewhere where they can be easily monitored."
Its website also explains that there's a 160Wh limit for lithium batteries and power banks being brought onboard.
Additional guidance for passengers
Its guidance also states: "Power banks must be individually protected i.e. placing in original retail packaging or a plastic bag."
The airline suggested that passengers visit its dangerous goods and prohibited articles page before they travel, which has lots of information on the items you can and can't take on board. It's worth checking this page if you need to take any medical equipment or mobility gear, from oxygen tanks to scooters, as there are a number of regulations you'll need to follow.
Further advice is also given for carrying vapes: "All electronic cigarettes and vaping devices must be carried in the cabin, recharging is strictly prohibited, and the device must be completely switched off. It is recommended that e-cigarettes and vaping devices are carried where they can be monitored i.e. on your person."
The airline also says: "EasyJet has a limit of 15 portable electronic devices per passenger". While this may seem like a lot, many passengers carry a mobile phone, tablet, power bank, and other devices such as cameras, so you may want to check how many items you're packing.
