Travel expert Simon Calder has predicted significant disruption for millions of Britons travelling over the Easter weekend. Despite soaring fuel and flight prices due to the Middle East conflict, many are expected to take to the roads and airports.
Calder advised that road traffic will be heaviest on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, particularly between 10am and 7pm. He suggested leaving early or late to avoid queues. Saturday is also expected to be busy, especially southbound on the M25 from the M1 to Heathrow and on the M5 south from the M4 at Bristol. On Easter Monday, northbound M5 traffic from Taunton to Bristol and the M25 will see delays.
The rail network will face pressure from engineering works. London Euston to Milton Keynes Central will be closed, with intercity services starting at Milton Keynes Central and a bus replacement from Bedford. Closures also affect Leeds to York via Garforth, the line through Huddersfield, Cambridge to King’s Lynn, and Winchester to Southampton.
For ferry passengers at Dover, Port chief Doug Bannister advised not arriving more than two hours early, promising rebooking without charge if a sailing is missed.
