Deadly Danger on Two Wheels: London Fire Brigade Issues Urgent E-Bike and E-Scooter Warning
E-bike and e-scooter fires cause multiple deaths in London

The London Fire Brigade has issued a stark warning about the growing danger of e-bikes and e-scooters after new statistics revealed these popular modes of transport have been responsible for multiple deaths and hundreds of destructive fires across the capital.

The Alarming Statistics

Shocking new figures show that e-bikes and e-scooters have already caused three fatalities and 116 injuries in London this year alone. The data reveals these vehicles were involved in 104 fires, with e-bikes accounting for the vast majority at 87 incidents, while e-scooters were responsible for 17 blazes.

Why These Fires Are So Dangerous

Fire safety experts point to lithium-ion batteries as the primary culprit. These power sources can enter an uncontrollable state called "thermal runaway," where they overheat and potentially explode. The consequences can be catastrophic within seconds.

Deputy Commissioner Dom Ellis emphasised the severity: "When these batteries fail, they do so with ferocious power and because they contain so much energy, they can cause devastating fires that develop quickly and are very difficult to control."

The Hidden Dangers in Your Home

Many of the most serious incidents occur when these devices are being charged overnight or in communal areas. The London Fire Brigade has identified several critical risk factors:

  • Using non-compliant or aftermarket chargers
  • Purchasing second-hand batteries of unknown quality
  • Overcharging devices overnight
  • Storing e-vehicles in escape routes

A Call for Regulation and Awareness

Fire chiefs are now calling for stricter regulations and greater public awareness. The problem has grown exponentially alongside the popularity of these eco-friendly transport options, creating what officials describe as an "emerging trend" of serious fires.

The message from fire safety professionals is clear: while e-bikes and e-scooters offer convenient urban mobility, their power sources demand respect and proper handling to prevent tragedy.
