Passengers on Porter Airlines flight PD444 were left stranded after a child refused to fasten their seatbelt, forcing the cancellation of the flight. The incident occurred on Thursday at Victoria International Airport in British Columbia, where the aircraft was bound for Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Safety Precaution Grounds Flight
The plane had already left the terminal and was taxiing to the runway when crew members noticed the young passenger standing in their seat, refusing to buckle up. Despite attempts by the child's parents and cabin crew to secure the seatbelt, the child resisted, creating an unsafe situation that prevented takeoff.
As a result, the aircraft returned to the terminal, and all passengers were disembarked. According to a spokesperson for Porter Airlines, once the child and their family were removed, it was too late for the flight to depart, leading to its cancellation.
Passengers Express Frustration
The airline apologized for the disruption. "We apologize for the effect this had on other passengers, who were able to depart on a flight the following day," said Brad Cicero, as reported by CBC. The aircraft eventually departed the next afternoon.
Passengers on the flight described "a lot of frustration" caused by the delay. However, one traveler, Aryeh Kozuch, noted that the child appeared scared rather than misbehaving. "They just kept hiding under their seat. If they got forced into [being] strapped in, they just kind of slid out underneath," she said.
Another passenger, Hillary Hertzberg, criticized the airline's handling of the situation. "The kid eventually got off the plane at 11.30pm so we had been on the flight for about almost an hour at that point," she said.
Seatbelt Rules and Prior Incidents
The UK's Civil Aviation Authority advises that passengers must wear seatbelts when the seatbelt sign is illuminated, including during taxi, take-off, landing, and turbulence. The guidance states: "It is recommended to keep your seat belt fastened throughout the flight and is mandatory when the seat belt sign is illuminated... Ensure your belt is adjusted for a tight but comfortable fit, with the buckle accessible."
A similar incident occurred years ago on a TUI flight from Kos to Manchester, where police boarded the plane after a woman allegedly refused to fasten her child's seatbelt. That flight, delayed by nearly six hours, faced further issues when the pilot had to abort landing due to a passenger ignoring seatbelt signs, as reported by Manchester Evening News.
