Airport Closure Details
Charleroi Airport in Brussels, Belgium's second largest airport, will shut down for 11 weeks in 2028 to undergo a major renovation. The closure is scheduled from August 15 to October 31, 2028, affecting all flights during that period.
Impact on Passengers and Airlines
Approximately two million travellers are expected to be affected, including those travelling during the summer holidays and the October half-term break. Airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, which operate from the airport, will be forced to temporarily reroute flights to other airports, potentially leading to cancellations or diversions.
Upgrade Works
The €50 million (£42.8 million) project includes completely resurfacing the 3,200-metre runway and other major infrastructure modernisation works. The airport stated: "A complete refurbishment of Charleroi airport's sole runway, together with other major infrastructure modernisation works, has been scheduled by SOWAER (the company behind the works) for the second half of 2028." Further details on rerouting plans have not yet been released.
