Brussels Charleroi Airport, Belgium's second largest airport, will close for an 11-week period in 2028 to renovate its runway and undergo a major revamp. The closure is expected to impact around two million travellers, including passengers flying with Ryanair and other carriers such as Wizz Air.
Closure Dates and Impact
All flights between August 15 and October 31, 2028, will be affected, covering both the school summer holidays and the October half-term break. Airlines will be forced to temporarily reroute flights to different airports, with possible cancellations or diversions.
Runway Renovation and Costs
The works include a complete resurfacing of the airport's 3,200-metre runway and other infrastructure modernisation, totalling an estimated €50 million (£42.8 million). "A complete refurbishment of Charleroi airport's sole runway, together with other major infrastructure modernisation works, has been scheduled by SOWAER (the company behind the works) for the second half of 2028," the airport stated, according to several reports.
Further details on flight rerouting or cancellations have not yet been announced.
