Emergency services were called to a southbound stretch of the A1 near the villages of Swarland and Felton in Northumberland on 26 June following a two-car collision that left one vehicle overturned.
No Serious Injuries Reported
Northumbria Police confirmed that no-one was seriously injured in the collision. Vehicles were recovered and the road was cleared at around 3.15pm, with traffic reported to have now returned to normal.
A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 near Alnwick shortly after 1pm on 26 June. We dispatched two double crewed ambulances and two patients were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."
Calls for Dualling the A1
The crash occurred on a section of the A1 in Northumberland that is a dual carriageway. In recent weeks, there have been renewed calls to dual the entire stretch between Morpeth and the Scottish border after six people died on the road in May and June.
In Autumn 2024, the current Government scrapped a scheme to dual 13 miles of the road between Morpeth and Ellingham after predicted costs spiralled to more than £500 million. That came after a string of delays in granting the final approval under the Conservative Government, with the green light only coming after a general election had been called.
Local Leader Condemns Situation
Northumberland County Council leader Glen Sanderson described the condition of the A1 as "appalling" and said the authority would start work on research to make the case for the dualling project.
