Brit dies in Philippines; family faces £20k repatriation bill

Stephen Harper, a 35-year-old from Bellshill, Scotland, died suddenly on June 19 while travelling in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. His family is now facing an estimated £20,000 bill to bring his body back to the UK for a proper funeral.

Fundraising Campaign Launched

Lifelong friend Charles Brown set up a GoFundMe appeal to cover repatriation costs. In a post, he wrote: 'On the 19th June 2026 we received the devastating news that whilst travelling in the Philippines, my life long friend Stephen sadly lost his life. I am looking to raise some money on behalf of Stephen’s family to help bring his body back to the UK so that he can have the send off he deserves.'

Charles plans to cycle from Bellshill to Perth in Stephen's memory, recreating a ride they completed together with friends five years ago.

Tributes to a 'Kind-Hearted Lad'

Charles described Stephen as having 'a truly kind heart' and noted his passion for Celtic F.C., following the team home and away, as well as his love for travel. Stephen's mother, Tracy Harper, shared a heartbreaking tribute: 'With broken hearts, we share the sad news that our much-loved son Stephen passed away while travelling in Philippines/Manila. We are devastated by his loss and will cherish our memories of him forever.'

Fellow Celtic supporters also paid tribute. A post by Celtic YNWA called his death 'absolutely heartbreaking' and highlighted that Stephen 'lived and breathed Celtic.' It added: 'A kind-hearted lad, a traveller, a friend and clearly someone who meant the world to the people around him.'

Repatriation Costs and Support

Stephen had been travelling for several months before his death. At the time of writing, the fundraising appeal had raised more than £20,000, surpassing its target. The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support during this difficult time.
