All flights in and out of Bristol Airport have been cancelled this evening (Friday, August 7) after emergency repairs were required on the runway.
Airport Webcams reported on X: "Airport currently closed for emergency runway repairs. Inbounds diverting to London/Gatwick, Birmingham and Cardiff."
Passengers stranded
According to BristolLive, many passengers who were due to fly out are attempting to leave the airport and book flights from other airports instead.
One traveler said: "I decided to take a bus somewhere. Still in queues to get taxis to go to London for £300 and take tomorrow morning flights. I'm trying to get to Paris but all the flights are already booked."
Another passenger reported that the tannoy system had failed, adding to the confusion. They wrote on X: "All flights cancelled from @BristolAirport airport, it seems that the tannoy system had also gone down as no announcements being made and the only way to find out what's happening is a couple of harassed @easyJet reps."
Airport statement
A Bristol Airport spokesperson said: "Due to a defect on the runway, we have temporarily suspended operations as a precaution, in order to inspect and repair the section affected. We apologise for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority. Customers should refer to their airlines with any flight queries."
Inrix reported: "Bristol Airport has been closed due to emergency runway repairs with all arrivals diverting. Passengers should contact their airline for flight information."
Paul Smith, chief executive of Bristol-based Elim Housing Association, described the scene: "Luggage coming out though carousels but no info on which flight is on which one, it's a bit of a jumble sale."
