Passengers at Brisbane's domestic airport were evacuated and flights delayed on Monday after a technical fault with a single metal detector prompted a full rescreening of travellers and staff.
The airport confirmed the fault was quickly identified and posed no safety or security threat, but said the rescreening process would take time, causing flight delays. Social media images showed large crowds gathering outside the terminal.
Passenger Craig MacLean described the scene as 'mass confusion', with thousands of people funnelling outside after being told of a security breach. Another traveller, Zachariah Kelly, reported a delay of around two and a half hours on his flight to Sydney.
The airport apologised for the inconvenience and thanked passengers for their patience. Brisbane's international terminal was unaffected by the issue.
