Brent Cross flyover, used by more than 120,000 vehicles a day, is set to undergo major 'safety-critical' repairs starting tomorrow, with lane closures and delays expected for up to two years. The north London flyover on the A41 has been under a weight restriction since October 2022 as a safety measure, with vehicles over 7.5 tonnes diverted onto local roads.
Which roads are affected?
The main roads affected are the A41, A406 North Circular, and surrounding roads. Specific restrictions include a lane restriction on A41 Hendon Way from October 1 to October 28, 2026, a contraflow system on the flyover from October 29, and overnight closures on the A406 North Circular westbound on September 30 from 10pm to 5am. Further overnight closures on A41 Hendon Way southbound and northbound are scheduled for early October.
What is TfL advising?
TfL urged motorists to avoid the A41 and A406 Brent Cross area where possible, allow more time, and consider walking, cycling, or public transport. Buses will continue to operate but may face diversions during night closures. Works will pause between November and early January to minimise disruption during the festive period.
Why is the work needed?
Checks found the flyover's maximum weight capacity was lower than previously assessed, leading to the 7.5-tonne limit. The works include strengthening the structure, replacing safety barriers, and installing a new waterproofing system. TfL said the work 'will reduce the risk of future unplanned closures and emergency repairs.' The project received £10.8 million in government funding.
