A tragic boating accident near San Francisco's Alcatraz Island has left one person dead, two missing, and 16 others rescued after a pontoon pleasure boat capsized and sank on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred approximately 600 yards (548 meters) from the famous tourist attraction, prompting a large-scale search-and-rescue operation involving multiple agencies.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen confirmed during a Tuesday evening press conference that 19 people were aboard the vessel when it sank. First responders arrived to find a severely injured individual, who was brought to shore and pronounced deceased despite CPR efforts. Of the 16 rescued, 13 were safe on shore, while three others received medical treatment at a San Francisco hospital for impact injuries sustained from falling into the water. A dog was also declared dead. All passengers are believed to be adults. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed search-and-rescue operations were ongoing Tuesday afternoon, with 11 boats, helicopters, and divers deployed.
Cause of the Incident
Initial reports suggested a fire had broken out, but Chief Crispen stated there was no indication of a blaze. The cause of the capsizing remains unclear. When authorities arrived, the boat was leaking fuel and its motor was still running, with exhaust emitting. Only the top level of the vessel remained above water before it fully sank beneath the bay's surface. The boat, described as a pontoon pleasure boat by San Francisco Fire Lieutenant Mariano Elias, is believed to have departed from the St. Francis Yacht Club in the city's Marina district.

Chief Crispen noted that search efforts would continue for hours to locate the two missing individuals. He said that if anyone was in the water, tides and winds indicated they would be moving east, though he did not specify the search area's size. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie called it an all-hands-on-deck search and hopefully rescue, extending condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
