Auto Express has named the BMW 2 Series as the best coupe on sale in the United Kingdom, beating the Honda Prelude and Ford Mustang to the top spot. The list, compiled by the renowned motoring publication, focuses on driving pleasure rather than practicality, with coupes described as a segment where car companies can have fun.
BMW 2 Series Takes the Crown
The BMW 2 Series, a rear-wheel-drive model, was praised for its value for money, lithe handling, and brilliant cabin. However, it faced criticism for expensive options, limited space, and a small trunk. Auto Express summarised: "Sometimes less really is more, and you don’t need to look further than the BMW 2 Series for proof." The publication added that the baby BMW handles with real poise and driver involvement while offering grown-up refinement and a top-tier interior.
Honda Prelude Secures Second Place
The newly revived Honda Prelude, now a hybrid, came in second. It was lauded for its great chassis, decent hybrid system, and impressive overall efficiency. Drawbacks included modest acceleration off the line, small rear seats, and noticeable tyre noise at motorway speeds.
Ford Mustang Rounds Out the Top Three
The Ford Mustang, available in right-hand drive for British buyers only recently, took third place. Auto Express highlighted its legendary image, brilliant styling, and punchy V8 engine, but noted an old-fashioned interior, high running costs, and elevated emissions. Former chief reviewer Alex Ingram said: "For all its ability as a driver’s car, the Mustang’s credentials as a long-distance cruiser manage to exceed even those high standards."
Driving Impressions
A journalist who drove the BMW M2 in 2023 and the new Honda Prelude at Goodwood Media Day described the Prelude as refreshingly lithe, though they wished for a manual gearbox. They noted that the Prelude shares DNA with the Civic, making it a joy on the road.
